Another vehicle with a working battery

Steps for How to Jump a Car

Park the Cars Safely
Pull the working car close, but don’t let the vehicles touch. Turn off both engines. -
Connect the Jumper Cables

Red clamp to dead battery’s positive (+)
-
Red clamp to good battery’s positive (+)
-
Black clamp to good battery’s negative (–)
-
Black clamp to metal ground on dead car (unpainted bolt or bracket—not the battery)

Start the Working Car
Let it run for 2–3 minutes. -
Start the Dead Car
If it doesn’t start right away, wait a minute and try again. -
Remove the Cables in Reverse Order

Black from grounded metal

Black from good battery
-
Red from good battery
-
Red from dead battery

Let the Jumped Car Run
Keep it running for at least 15–20 minutes to recharge the battery.
Pro Tip: If your car keeps dying, your battery or alternator might need to be replaced.
